Hillbilly Eulogy: The Rise and Constant Fall of a Man Whose Spine Dissolved

“I’m just riding the wave,” is likely what JD Vance is saying behind doors when he’s inevitably asked, “Why Trump?” As with his name, JD Vance has changed his political stance from what it once was. In this instance, he’s done so seemingly to boost his lukewarm political career.

A Man of Strong Words and Weak Character

Once upon a time less fertile with political opportunities, JD Vance called Donald Trump a “moral disaster,” but Vance’s backbone has seemingly dissolved since then. Also, he once reflected on the idea of Donald Trump being “America’s Hitler”.

Vance further lamented: “‘I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler,”’ “Vance wrote in a message to a friend in 2016.” “‘How’s that for discouraging?’”

But what are values when faced with the potential to run the greatest country in the world from the top down? What does integrity mean when Vance could be one heartbeat away from the presidency?

To put JD Vance’s decision-making process regarding running with a man he despises into perspective, JD Vance is forty years old, while Donald Trump is seventy eight years old. Trump didn’t become president until he was seventy years old. Imagine what JD Vance could do politically between now and the next thirty years.

The “Bro” Threat

JD Vance has ranted, showing his disdain for “childless cat ladies” and why he thinks the votes of parents should count more than Americans who don’t have kids, and this train of thought is a threat to the very fabric of the country’s order. It supports a system of discrimination and favoritism, while punishing people who don’t have children for whatever reason.

From a risqué set of a locally known comedian or a podcast guest, JD Vance’s comments would be hilarious. They would be funny because of their level of ridiculousness. They’re almost an order of non-sequiturs. Those comments are different when the person saying them actually believes them and could actually apply policy based off those terrible beliefs across the country. It’s not funny at that point.

Yet here we stand at the most curious place in the history of our country. On one side, we have a presidential candidate who represents everything this country fought against: Authoritarianism, selfishness, criminality, thievery, fraud and chaos. Opposite, we have a candidate who is the epitome of everything this country strives to represent: Honest, dedicated, trustworthy, hardworking, law-abiding and law-enforcing. JD Vance stand’s with the former.

Hillbilly Eulogy

JD Vance published his memoir Hillbilly Elegy in 2016, and it recounts his poorish hometown, while returning to the values that made him who he was. The word “was” is important.

By any measure, Vance’s book gave a voice to an audience that needs to be heard, but he is no longer a part of that audience. Since then, he has shed every moral fiber of his existence to chase money and power. It’s a story told since before clocks and continues to reincarnate itself in every form of government. In this instance, JD is just an NPC succumbing to an urge that he himself can not explain. Hillbilly Elegy will indeed be followed up by Hillbilly Eulogy: The Rise and Constant Fall of a Man Whose Spine Dissolved.
