The president of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traoré recently made news across Europe when he attended the inauguration of Ghanaian President John Mahama, while armed with a pistol. Some European media outlets cited it as a security breach. However, supporters of President Traoré, the second youngest world leader, argue the Western media’s focus on the president’s firearm is just a demonstration of their fear of Black men, especially armed young Black men in power.
A Brief History
When President Ibrahim Traoré was a captain, he led the revolt that unseated Burkina Faso military leader Paul-Henri Damiba. The move came shortly after Paul-Henri Damiba’s short stint as president of the nation, after his participation in a coup against the government.

However, Damiba’s reign was cut short, as announced September 30, 2022, by then-Captain Traore. According to Aljazeera, Traore said, “… a group of officers had decided to remove Damiba due to his inability to deal with a worsening armed uprising in the country.” The publication noted Traoré’s experience as head of special forces unit “Cobra” in the northern region of Kaya.”
Appointed president and head of state of Burkina Faso, President Traore also operates as chief of the Burkinabe armed forces. Born March 14, 1988, in Bondokuy, Burkina Faso, he has a personal connection to the interests of his country, and he has shed blood in battle defending it. He’s also a well-educated man, having obtained a degree in 2009 from the University of Ouagadougou, graduating with honors. Although President Traoré is young, weighing in his experience and education on and off the battlefield, he is a perfect fit for the vital roles he has. He embodies strength, intelligence and independence. He’s also ensuring his country reflects those values as well, with the nation’s first indigenous electric vehicle being coming to fruition under his leadership.
President Traore’s Gun Triggers Western Media
While the inauguration of new leadership and the changes it brings with it should have been the focus of reports about Ghana’s presidential inauguration, the Western media instead drew attention to the fact that the 37-year-old decorated military leader Traoré — who’s now leading a country — carried a firearm. Ghanaians didn’t have complaints about Traoré’s being armed, so the allegations by the Western media are unfounded.

Meanwhile, various sources are reporting the development of Burkina Faso’s first indigenous electric vehicle. According to TheElectricCityHub.com, “Burkina Faso has made history by unveiling its first 100 per cent Indigenous electric car brand, ITAOUA.” This is an important milestone because it demonstrates the country’s ability to develop advanced technology 100% within its own borders and without dependence on Western tech or influence.
Having a range of 205 miles on a 30-minute charge, the ITAOUA outperforms Tesla. At a supercharger, a Tesla driver can add 150 —- 200 miles of range with a 30-minute charge. This number varies and could higher or lower. The ITAOUA appears to be more efficient than similar vehicles based off its range and technology.
This is impressive, even more so knowing Burkinabe engineers design and manufacture the technology for this electric vehicle. Because of their genius and others like them across the continent of Africa, the electric vehicle industry there is booming. TheElectricCityHub.com states, “Africa’s electric vehicle market was worth $11.94 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $21.39 billion by 2027, rising 10.2 per cent annually.”
The launching of ITAOUA promises to boost the economy of Burkina Faso significantly. The locals are excited for the jobs that will come and the new industries they’ll have an opportunity to help grow. Renewable energy sources and maintenance are also areas in which businesses and the citizens will see prosperity.
The Takeaway
President Traoré is Burkina Faso’s new young leader, who took power from a man he and others concluded didn’t meet the moment to quell a rising armed rebellion. Traore has been supportive of other African nations, having appeared at the inauguration of the Ghanaian president. The Western media took President Traoré’s being armed out of context, but the Ghanaian government had no problems with his actions. Under his leadership, Burkina Faso has announced its first indigenous electric vehicle. It promises to outperform other electric vehicles, and its range is indicative of that. Burkina Faso looks like it will further establish itself as a hub of electric vehicles and advanced technologies under the leadership of President Traoré.
