What Happened

In a resurfaced video from 2022 that is going viral on YouTube and other social media platforms, Maywood mayor Nathaniel George Booker is filmed passed out in his vehicle on the expressway. Police bodycam footage shows police officers approach Booker’s vehicle and knock loudly on the driver’s side window.

Booker, who is slumped over, comes to and looks at the officers but appears confused. An officer waves at Booker and says, “Police. Open your door.” The police repeatedly ask Booker to open his door and say, “You’re on the expressway.” In the busy Chicago downtown area, Booker’s vehicle had caused traffic to congest, prompting several 9-1-1 calls.

After a minute or so, Booker finally opens his car door. The police officers are concerned about his well-being, and they ask him if he knows where is and if he has any medical conditions. Booker’s responses are incoherent, as he tries to explain what’s going on.

“Have you had any drinks tonight?” an officer asks Booker, who mentions going to a fundraiser where he had drinks. Booker denies being intoxicated. When the officer asks him to take a seat in the back of his squad car, Booker refuses. He also refuses any medical attention and repeatedly asks, “Should I call my attorney?”

Eventually, the officers are able to get Booker to take a sobriety test, in which he was tasked with walking a straight line. He fails this test and is subsequently arrested.

“At the last court date on July 1, the statutory suspension for a DUI was rescinded and taken back based on a lack of evidence,” Mayor Booker said on August 02, 2022. He also pointed out that he had not taken a breathalyzer. It appears that the mayor’s license was suspended but later reinstated with the dismissal of the DUI charge. At the time, he still had a pending obstruction of traffic charge. The disposition of that misdemeanor charge is unclear.

Booker has responded to the resurfacing of this video and paints it as a political smear meant to damage his chances of being reelected. He further added that he has moved past this incident and has served faithfully as mayor of Maywood. Some of his critics have accused him of being derelict in his duties. Others praise his business acumen and credits him with bringing more financial stability to his constituents.
