A male teacher was caught on camera body-slamming a 16-year-old female student over musical chairs on August 22. The entire incident was captured on video. What started out as a friendly but competitive game at a pep rally ended with the girl in question being rushed to the emergency room with three broken ribs.

Earlier in the game of musical chairs at West Side High School in Jacksonville, a group of students and staff competed against each other to be the last one seated. Not long before the slamming incident, that same teacher can be seen shoving another young girl out of her seat.

Video of the same male teacher shoving another female student from a chair before breaking the ribs of Millikin.

When the game came down to just the teacher and 16-year-old Nila Millikin, it seemed the girl had won. She was fully seated when the teacher took her by the waistband and completely body-slammed her. He then took the seat and jammed his arms in the air during a celebratory jog.

Meanwhile, Millikin was in excruciating pain. In the background of the video, others can seen rushing to her aid. It is obvious she was in bad shape. The teacher didn’t seem to take notice.

Reacting to the bodyslam in an interview, Millikin, said, “… he ran after me, picked me up and then slammed me… I was thinking, ‘I’m on the ground. Like, I shouldn’t be on the ground this hard.’” In addition to the broken ribs, she also suffered a concussion.

Joanna Millikin, the student’s mother, “expressed frustration over the incident, noting that her daughter is still recovering from her injuries,” as reported by WFTV.com. She says no one should have to deal with their kid going to the emergency room over a teacher “tackling” their student over musical chairs.

Millikin, beside her mother, describes being body-slammed and having broken ribs.

After having what she described as a “constructive” conversation with the principal, Joanna said there was some action. The teacher was reassigned so that he has no contact with students. An investigation into his actions and how to appropriately deal with them is underway.

Still, parents are asking, Why did the teacher deem it acceptable to bodyslam a student? Why did he shove the other girl out the chair? That would have been too much in many schools, and these questions must be answered as part of the investigation.

According to reporter Deja Mayfield, the Duval County Schools sent [the reporter’s team] this statement:

“We are aware of this incident, as school leadership immediately reported this to the district and notified the family of the student involved. Employees are held to high standards and expectations, and this staff member has been reassigned to duties without student contact while the district’s Office of Professional Standards investigates. As this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide additional details.”

The Takeaway

At a pep rally in Jacksonville, Florida, things got out of control when a teacher body-slammed a 16-year-old female student. She is still recovering from three broken ribs and a concussion. The teacher has been reassigned to have no student contact, as his administration figures out how to deal with his actions.
