Nassie Mason (28) and Erving Harris (31) are in custody for First-Degree Murder. It occurred in front of six undercover Chicago police officers and the arrest is being celebrated as one of the quickest ever. The circumstances leading up to it are unbelievable.

What Happened

On Tuesday, March 24, police say Nassie Mason and Erving Harris waited in a stolen gray Honda with stolen plates for an hour and a half outside of Jerry Lewis’s office. The 67-year-old’s office is located near Madison and Leavitt, not far from the famous United Center in Chicago or Malcolm X College. As Mason and Harris waited, they put on ski masks and latex gloves.

According to reports, when Lewis walked by at around 12:45 p.m., Mason and Harris jumped out and opened fire. Mason reportedly shot Lewis in the head, and Harris fired several more times after he was already on the ground. They thought they had committed the perfect ambush execution. But they were wrong by a wide margin.

Six undercover Chicago police officers were patrolling the block in an unmarked car. They witnessed the entire assassination from start to finish. Before the suspects could even make it back to their car, the police were on them. Mason and Erving were arrested within eight seconds. The police did some research into the backgrounds of the suspects and victim.

Authorities found that Harris was actually on parole for an aggravated carjacking at the time of the shooting. If that wasn’t enough, that carjacking charge happened while he was also on parole for a previous drug conviction, according to CBSNews.com. The shooters are the direct opposite of the victim.

Jerry Lewis was the Executive Director of the 1901 Community Implementation Committee. The “1901 Project” is a huge $7-billion redevelopment plan for the 55 acres around the United Center. Lewis was the point person for making sure minority-owned businesses and local West Side residents actually got a piece of that work. He was also respected and loved.

According to ENR.com, Lewis was known as a “selfless but no-nonsense” mentor. He hired people from the West Side who had past gang ties or criminal records, trying to give them a legitimate path forward in the construction industry. His wife, Zandra, described him as a hardworking family man who “fought for his community.” The courts aren’t taking any other chances with the two men who assassinated him.

The Aftermath

Nassie Mason and Erving Harris have been charged with First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. Both were ordered held without bond last Friday. They won’t be out in the world taking any other lives.

The Takeaway

Erving Harris and Nassie Mason are in jail without bond after committing an execution in front of half a dozen Chicago police. No motive has been released, but police sources hint that it may have been a paid assassination. The two will have court arraignments on Friday, April 17 of this year. It will take place at 26th and California, the Leighton Criminal Court Building. During the April hearing, a grand jury will likely have returned formal indictments against the two. This will be a short trial.
