Billionaire Elon Musk through DOGE — the Department of Government Efficiency named after Musk’s faltering cryptocurrency — has been charged with dismantling USAID, the philanthropic arm of the United States responsible for providing lifesaving funds to the sick, dying and suffering around the globe. While Musk has argued USAID is a complete waste, it has been revealed “to The Lever, USAID’s inspector general was investigating Musk’s Starlink partnership with the Ukrainian government around the time DOGE shut down the organization.” If true, this is a conflict of interest explains Musk’s eagerness to dismantle the organization and is reason enough to keep him away from USAID.
What Happened
Elon Musk has caused quite the stir, shutting down USAID with the assistance of teenagers barely out of high school, and another employee who resigned after it was uncovered he had tweeted statements such as “Normalize Indian hate.” Musk announced recently and unsurprisingly that he will rehire this racist. Meanwhile, Elon has ranted about how wasteful the department is. His intent is to fire thousands of USAID employees, but a judge has entered a temporary restraining order against Elon Musk and DOGE preventing them from doing so. Elon’s apparent eagerness to dismantle the department led to this lawsuit and, more importantly, the question as to why he was so eager to shut down this department in the first place.
According to a Futurism article by writer Victor Tangermann, “In early 2022, SpaceX delivered tens of thousands of Starlink terminals to Ukrainians on the front lines, greatly enhancing their connectivity.” This was seen as an altruistic move by the Tesla mogul to help the war-ridden nation. Tangerman states, “It didn’t take long for Musk to get cold feet, arguing that it was ‘unreasonable’ for SpaceX to continue footing their bills.”
Other news: Congresswoman JASMINE CROCKETT calls TRUMP “a THUG in charge of the United States”, and conservatives are triggered.
Elon was busy playing both sides of the field, with reports revealing he’d met with Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, several times during the invasion. Biographer Walter Isaacs argues this Russian influence led to Elon’s sabotaging of the Starlink operation in Ukraine. Specifically, Elon allegedly “intentionally hamstrung the Starlink satellite network to thwart a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s naval fleet near the Crimean coast.” Reports also reveal that Elon Musk received millions of dollars from USAID for Starlink support in Ukraine. He then reportedly subverted the operation. If he did this, he could be guilty of fraud if his intent was to defraud the government for subsidies in return for an operation he planned to subvert.
Elon denied the allegations overall and his intent but acknowledged refusing a governmental request to activate Starlink when the intent was to sink nearly all of a Russian fleet. Russian forces have been able to capitalize off the use of blackmarket Starlink terminals to fuel their attack on Ukraine as well.

As the world knows, Elon Musk is both the richest man and pettiest man — second only to America’s current president — in the world, and his gutting of USAID is personal. Just like Trump has in the past, Elon has shut down an investigation into himself. In doing so, he’s cut off assistance to millions of people suffering across the world. Children will go without food, adults without lifesaving medication and countries without the necessary support to battle social ailments.
The Takeaway
Elon Musk’s gutting of USAID appears to be more personal than altruistic. USAID had been actively investigating Elon when he figuratively kicked in the door and performed a hostile takeover with the help of teenagers and a white supremacist. His sabotaging of Starlink in Ukraine is what led to his being investigated. A judge has entered a temporary restraining order stopping Elon and DOGE from firing thousands of USAID employees. Meanwhile, Musk should be investigated for his apparent conflict of interest and misuse of governmental resources.
