On Sunday, Kendrick Lamar headlined Super Bowl 59, which ended with the Philadelphia Eagles crushing Donald Trump’s Super Bowl pick, the Kansas City Chiefs. The upsetting score was 40 — 22, but it was rapper Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance that heated MAGA supporters the most.

What Happened

Donald Trump showed up to Super Bowl 59, after sitting down for a brief interview with FOX News’ Bret Baier and predicting the Chiefs would win. Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar was gearing up for one of the most anticipated Super Bowl performances in recent memory.

Kendrick Lamar stated during his Super Bowl appearance, “You picked the right time but the wrong guy.” That line pretty much sums up his performance and MAGA reactions. Tennis champion Serena Williams’ Crip Walking to Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” was just the underlying emphasis. Some say it infuriated her ex, singer Drake, whom the song is based on. This performance came not too long after Kendrick collected five Grammys at the 67th ceremony for his original music, written and performed by him. This is saying much more about him than one can say about his competition.

During the performance that saw Samuel L. Jackson dressed in a red, white and blue costume as Uncle Sam, the pressure left Trump unable to take it. He left marched out halfway through the Super Bowl, around the of time this impactful performance. Freedom of speech was more than he could deal with.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, MAGA supporters took to the platform to express their rage and disgust at seeing a woke rapper perform at the Super Bowl. Some of them complained they couldn’t understand the music.

Lauren Boebert is the U.S. representative for Colorado’s 4th congressional district and a gun rights activist. She found her way to X to ask if she were the only person who needed “subtitles for [Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl 59 performance].” The post was seen by over three million people but garnered mixed reviews. The outrageous statement was so much so, it leaked outside the confines of X.

In response to her inquiry, Dr. Rashad Ritchey, — political analyst and host of YouTube show Indisputable — informed Boebert why she had trouble understanding the music. He told Boebert, “You’re not enlightened, ma’am. This message was for the enlightened.” He went on to read about “other unenlightened individuals,” who responded as she did to Kendrick’s performance.

According to HUFFPOST, “Commentators Eric Daugherty and Benny Johnson… called… Lamar a “‘mumbling pagan Satanic cultist.’” The comments were reported on by dozens of media outlets, many that covered other attacks aimed at the rapper.

MAGA supporters are calling Kendrick’s act a bad performance wrapped in wokeness. Some have gone as far as pledging to never watch the Super Bowl again. Some also say that Kendrick’s performance came by way of “DEI” and proves why DEI is a problem. All of it is baseless.

Contrary to the MAGA hate being spewed through social media, fans of Kendrick can’t stop talking about his performance. News outlets are covering it as well. In the worlds of YouTube and TikTok, people are putting the pieces together to understand the significance of this Super Bowl performance. They appear to be pleased with the jewels Kendrick has dropped for them to examine.

The Takeaway

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl 59 performance was politically polarizing. MAGA supporters ran to X and their podcasts to express their dislike of the performance. Their arguments come off as more triggered and angry than anything of substance. Regardless of their opinions, Kendrick Lamar fans liked his performance, and so did the many objective news outlets that covered it.
