The alleged shooter of Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk is in custody after “being identified by someone close to him,” according to NBC News.

What Happened

22-year-old Utah man Tyler Robinson has been arrested and is suspected of being the killer of Conservative Charlie Kirk, according to NBC News.

“I think with a high-degree of certainty, we have him,” President Donald Trump said on Fox & Friends Friday morning. He added, “… someone who knew him turned him in.”

According to NBC News, “NBC News sources have confirmed the arrest and said a family member of the suspect turned him in to police.” Some have claimed on social media that it was his dad, a retired law enforcement officer, who turned Tyler in after he confessed to him. The arrest comes after a very rough start to the investigation.

Moments after Charlie Kirk’s shooting, the FBI arrested at least two different suspects. At one point, the FBI director Kash Patel posted on X that they had the shooter in custody. This turned out not to be the case, and both men were released from custody. However, one of the men was charged with obstruction of justice, but it is unclear on what grounds. This made the FBI turn up the heat in their investigation, ultimately getting more reliable leads.

After Patel’s gaffe, some called for his job, while others urged the FBI to work harder. The FBI released photos and video of a figure appearing to be laying on a rooftop with a clear line to the spot in which Kirk was shot.

According to reporter Julia Bonavita, “Authorities said the gunshot came from about 200 yards away, likely from a perch atop the Losee Center building, which is on the opposite side of the plaza from where Kirk was speaking.”

Authorities also found a “high-powered, bolt-action rifle” near a route the suspect is thought to have taken, according to FBI Salt Lake City Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls. This is believed to be the murder weapon.

Agent Bohls said they also found some biometric evidence. This includes “a palm print, footprint and imprint from a forearm,” as noted by reporter Bonavita.

Additionally, investigators were seen collecting video evidence from homes nearby the campus. This is where some of the still-shots and videos released to the public came from. According to NBC News, the FBI had been hesitant to release the photos. They believed they could identify the man themselves.

However, with a $100,000 reward being offered by the FBI for information leading to the arrest of the suspect and the new evidence, the FBI decided to move ahead with releasing the videos and photos. It seems to have paid off for now, as a suspect has been arrested.
