YouTube and TikTok star Tamo, Norratamo on YouTube, recently had one of his livestreams crashed by a racist hurling the n-word. Tamo had been showing off some of his most recent Pokémon card buys. Being relatively new to collecting, he said he finds joy in connecting with others in the community. He also helps others verify and appraise their cards. He was doing just that when his livestream was bombed.

What Happened

During the livestream previously mentioned which has gotten millions of views, a guy enters the live and says to Tamo, “I have cards. Can you help me figure out if they’re worth anything?” In an act of goodwill, Tamo agrees.

“What are the numbers at the very bottom? On the very, very bottom of the card?” Tamo says. He then shows one of his own cards and indicates where to find the numbers to which he’s referring.

In response, the guy says, “It’s n…” and proceeds to spell out the n-word.

Momentarily, Tamo pauses. Then, he simply asks, “Dude, are you serious? Why are you like this?” The guy continues with the slur.

Tamo goes on to explain that video and to say he’s been collecting cards for about five months and is still growing his collection. He says, “… I love opening packs. I love opening packs on my YouTube channel. I love watching people open packs… It’s fun, but I don’t bother anybody. In my year of doing content, the most racism I’ve ever received has been in Pokémon community. It wasn’t just this thing that happened tonight.”

Although he wasn’t pleased with the racist disrespect, Norratamo held his composure. With a clear mind, he decided he wouldn’t let this troll walk away without facing real-life consequences.

The Follow-Up

“To the white guy who called me slurs over and over again in my livestream the other night for no reason, guess what? You’re going to get kicked out of the United States Navy. You know how they tell us we should be careful what we do on social media because there could be real-life consequences? Hi. My name is Real-Life Consequences,” Tamo says in a follow-up video.

Turns out, I am going to do something.

He says that he knows the guy’s name, where he’s from and that he has even seen the guy’s Navy disciplinary records. Tamo says, “… you came into my livestream and saw a Black man who was talking about Pokémon cards and video games and you assumed ‘Yeah. He’s not going to do anything if I call him slurs repeatedly, even though he’s trying to help me.’ Turns out, I am going to do something.”

He also says the man goes from calling people the n-word to worshipping in other groups. On top of this, Tamo alleges he knows who to really talk to.

The racist has since been “discharged…”

“I’m getting you fired,” Tamo says, promising to send clips of the incident to the Navy Inspector General’s Office. The racist has since been “discharged,” according to reporter Bernadette Giacomazzo. Norratamo kept his promise, as his audience knew he would.

The Takeaway

A racist troll entered the livestream of creator Norratamo and got what he was looking for. This troll was once a member of the United States Navy. That is no longer the case, having thrown it away for 30-seconds worth of slurring the n-word at a peaceful, productive streamer. Tamo reminded us all that social media isn’t a vacuum or a bubble. There are real-life consequences.
