Three people are in custody in Chicago after an attempted Walmart robbery of an ATF agent led to shots being fired. It wasn’t a great day for the suspects.

What Happened

On April 2, an ATF agent was in the parking lot of a Southside Walmart as “part of an operation,” according to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. During the operation, the agency says three men attempted to rob the agent. Jeremy Jones, Christopher Densmore and Carmell Massey have been named as the suspects. It started with a sting to take down a potential gun trafficker. It was part of a larger Illinois ATF gun sting operation that’s ongoing. You can get all the facts about the most recent high-stakes arrests of the sting here on TheReedersBlock.com.

In this case, the agent was part of the undercover investigation that partly started on Instagram, according to reports. CWBChicago.com reports that agents had been interacting with the handle @spoodyfrm76th, allegedly owned by Jeremy Jones. The agents messaged the account about a Glock 19 and purple and black Ruger Security-9 that the account was advertising. This was what caught the ATF’s attention in the first place. They eventually set a time and location to meet. Things went south in the parking lot of Walmart.

Jones showed up in the passenger seat of a black Chevrolet Cruze at about 11:30 a.m. with Massey driving. Densmore was in the back seat, according to the complaint. Two ATF agents waited in their own vehicle. Densmore allegedly got into the agents’ car and showed them the Ruger. An agent agent took the clip out and put it on the console. The report claims Densmore reloaded it and demanded the money first, but they couldn’t agree on how the exchange would go. So, Densmore got back in the Cruze.

One agent then got out of their car and went to the Cruze on foot. He had $600 in government money for the Ruger. Jones allegedly grabbed the officer and money through the front passenger window. They struggled over the cash, and Jones pointed the Ruger at the agent, the complaint alleges. The officer pulled his own pistol and fired a shot at Jones. The bullet hit the Cruze. The agents gave the surveillance team the signal to close in. The three robbers panicked.

The complaint claims Massey drove the Cruze directly into an ATF vehicle. The other ATF vehicles boxed the Cruze in and “disabled” it. All three robbers were arrested.

No one was injured, according to reports by wgntv.com. The news station also notes that the Walmart at 109 S. Doty remained open, although a large portion of the crime scene was taped off. And shoppers were disturbed.

Shopper Victor Wayne Ford told WGN, “It blew me away… It’s not even safe at the grocery store.” It’s a sentiment many Chicagoans are feeling right now.
