A judge ruled that a Schaumburg man accused of torturing and killing his girlfriend who worked as a nurse to be held in detention. The ruling came after a series of bloody attacks over months that culminated in a video-recorded murder.
What Happened
According to WGN9, on March 12, Kevin Motykie, 56, accused his 43-year-old girlfriend Katherine “Kat” Torbick of cheating on him after being together for a decade. They were in their home at the time. She denied the accusations which only infuriated him further.

When she wouldn’t confess to cheating, police say Motykie strangled Kat with his hands until she nearly passed out. He then beat her and tried to “gouge her eyes out,” reports say.
After retrieving a knife, he held it to her throat and pulled her hair, multiple reports note. Then, he punched her in the nose. Amid all of this violence against her, he forced her to write a suicide note to her son, his step son. As he was putting the finishing touches on his plan, Kat managed to break free and escape the house.
At a neighbor’s house, Kat managed to call 911. However, Motykie was gone before they could arrest him. They issued an arrest warrant for aggravated domestic battery on March 16 but tragically never arrested him. By March 22, he had moved back into Kat’s home, but things were about to take the worst possible turn they could.
The Murder
At about 2 am, Motykie and Kat once again got into an argument over the prospect of her cheating. Motykie had been secretly audio recording the incident, and the content is sickening.
Motykie handcuffs Kat at some point, and she’s heard asking him to take the cuffs off. The snap of duct tape can be heard as he peels off pieces to bind her with. She repeatedly begs him to stop, but he doesn’t. For the next seven hours, he tortures her, going between sexually assaulting, berating and strangling her.
In the audio, he screams questions at her, interrogating her about cheating. Continuously, she begs him to stop. He responds by wrapping his hands around her throat and strangling her to death. Her last gasps for air can be heard on the recording, as reported by various sources.
By 9:24 am on April 30, Kat had succumbed to her injuries. When a man she had been seeing couldn’t reach her, he called police and asked for a well-being check. Police headed to the home, located at 1700 West Weathersfield Way in Schaumburg, Illinois.
The Schaumburg Police discovered Kat’s body on her living room couch at 11 pm. It wasn’t hard to find Motykie.
Police arrested the suspect in the garage of the home. He had killed a woman who had spent the last twenty years building a legacy for herself and her son.
Kat had been a GI nurse at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and then at Fox River MedSpa in Algonquin. She was the mother of a 12-year-old boy. Her coworkers described her as a warm and caring woman who would always put others before herself.
The Takeaway
On Friday, May 8, a judge denied the release of Kevin Motykie, 56, charged in the torture and murder of 43-year-old nurse Katherine “Kat” Torbick. He was arrested on scene by police on April 30, around 11 pm. His next court date is May 29, where more information about the case will be released.
