A La Porte County deputy was critically wounded by a suspect after taking him to the hospital. The circumstances are terrible.
What Happened
As reported by abc7chicago.com, at 6:45 am today, Friday, May 22, police say Deputy Jon Samuelson was on his way to a training session when he came across a disabled vehicle on State Route 2. Seeing the suspect inside, the officer pulled to offer assistance.
The suspect told the deputy he needed medical attention, and the deputy drove him to the facility Franciscan Health Michigan City, Indiana located in the 3500 block of Franciscan Way. The deputy then left, but further information would bring him back to the hospital.
At some point, the deputy found out the suspect may have been involved in a crime, and he returned to speak with the man. It went straight to chaos.
An altercation occurred between the suspect and the officer, and it escalated. Police say the suspect shot the officer three times and fled. It is unclear if the suspect used a weapon of their own or if they somehow disarmed the deputy.
Concerning the deputy, he was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The suspect was found hiding in the woods not far away.
Deputy Samuelson is 33 years old and is a 12-year veteran of their force. He is the son of a retired Michigan City Police officer, who “worked security at the hospital and was on-duty at the time of the shooting,” according to La Porte County Sheriff Ron Heeg.
The Takeaway
A suspect is in custody for the shooting of Deputy Jon Samuelson in a Michigan City, Indiana hospital. The deputy is alive but listed in critical condition. No one else at the hospital suffered any injuries.
