What Happened
On July 17th, Indiana man Mykael Robertson woke up and went out to take his dog on a walk. He also used this time to call his girlfriend. He had left his 10-year-old daughter, Malaysia Robertson, home in the bedroom. Two other kids, ages 6 and 7, were home at the time as well. While Robertson was gone, things exploded.
After getting back home, Robertson noticed Malaysia was no longer in the bedroom. At this point, he began calling out for her as he searched the home.
He found her unresponsive in another room, and he “started performing chest compressions,” as written by CBS News. However, Malaysia didn’t make it. She had accidentally shot herself. The other two kids heard the shots but were not injured.
According to police, Robertson told them he usually kept two unloaded guns in the top drawer of his dresser. CBS says that “because Malaysia was autistic, he didn’t think she knew where he kept his guns or how to operate a firearm.”
The mother of Malaysia said Robertson was taking care of his daughter and that she didn’t believe he would harm her.
