Police arrested an 18-year-old for the murder of his father. The community is shocked, considering what led to the shooting. Here are the details.
What Happened
As reported by CBS News, on Monday, May 7, Sami Mdanat had his cousin over at the Chicago Oak Lawn home he shared with his parents. Later in the night, Mdanat and his father, Ayed Mdanat, 50, got into an argument about the cousin still being in the home after 10 pm. Ayed didn’t like it, and eventually the cousin left. The situation was only just beginning however.
After the cousin went to his car, Mdanat went to his bedroom and called the cousin on FaceTime. During the call, reports say Mdanat produced a gun. He then allegedly told his cousin, “If my father comes through this door, I’m going to shoot him.” The cousin reportedly heard the father banging on the door at this time.
At roughly 10:45 pm, the father made entry into the bedroom, and Mdanat followed through with his promise. Police say once his father entered the room, Mdanat shot him multiple times with a Draco 7.62 mm semiautomatic handgun, killing him instantly. The cousin had been sitting outside in his vehicle and heard the shots. When he did, he sped off and called for help.
Mdanat’s mother was home at the time and ran towards the sound of the shots. She found her husband face-down on a couch in Mdanat’s room. Mdanat was nowhere to be found.
After the shooting, Mdanat fled the home, but he didn’t get far. Oak Lawn police found him hiding in bushes a few houses away. He was immediately taken into custody.
The Takeaway
Sami Mdanat, 18, has been charged with First-Degree Murder in the shooting death of his father Ayed Mdanat, 50. His next court date is May 29. He is currently being held in jail in Bridgeview.
