Yesterday, a Cook County deputy was injured in the process of attempting to arrest accused ATM thieves. What was a controlled arrest instantly turned chaotic when one of the men escaped in the wildest way. Here’s what we know.
What Happened
As reported by fox32chicago.com, the incident started at roughly 7 am on Saturday, May 16, when four men in a dark colored Jeep pulled up to a business located at 2800 W. 55th in the Gage Park community. Police say the group tried unsuccessfully to steal an ATM. After failing, they fled, but the series of terrible events was just starting.
In their rush to get away, reports allege the men crashed into the SUV of a 65-year-old man on 31st and California Avenue, near Cook County Jail. At 7:30 am, a deputy was patrolling the perimeter of the jail when he came upon a car crash.
At that point, the Chicago Police Department says the deputy saw four individuals fleeing. Although three of the men were arrested, the last was much harder to catch.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says the fourth suspect “pushed past” the deputy and leapt into his marked vehicle. The deputy tried pulling the man from the car, but the suspect allegedly hit him with the vehicle as he fled. He didn’t get far.
The Illinois State Police caught the suspect after boxing him in on the Dan Ryan Expressway in the 7800 block of the northbound lanes. The deputy was taken to a hospital, treated for minor injuries and released, according to Fox News. The news station also reports, “Three guns were recovered from the crash.”
The Takeaway
A deputy was injured on Saturday, May 16, after attempting to arrest accused ATM bandits near Cook County Jail. In the process, three suspects were apprehended, but the fourth took the deputy’s vehicle, hit him with it and fled, reports say. All of the suspects are now in custody, and the deputy has been released from the hospital.
