What Happened

On Monday May 18, Crime Stoppers Chicago reported that over 300 teens gathered in the Hyde Park community at 55th and Cottage Grove as part of a “teen takeover.” It was a terrible financial hit for the residents to say the least, according to neighbors.

During the takeover, the teens gathered at the Lake Front late Sunday night into early the next day. Their presence wouldn’t have been a problem, but it became unbelievably chaotic when some of the teens started climbing on top of cars. And residents began calling 911 for help.

Resident Jason Hale told fox32chicago.com “the chaos lasted for hours.” He said his was one of the cars damaged. “Yeah, it’s bad. The hood is messed up, terrible. A thousand [dollars] worth of damage, dents everywhere, footprints everywhere,” he said, according to the news station.

Hale’s was only one of 30 cars damaged by the group of teens, police say. However, Hale had more to say on the situation. From his point of view, the behavior comes from a lack of guidance. He questions where the parents are in all of this. And the damaged cars weren’t the worst of it.

Police confirmed they did arrest a 14-year-old girl. According to authorities, the girl was asked to leave the premises at 10:40 pm. Instead, they say she hit an officer in the forehead. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The juvenile was charged with two felonies and lesser counts for reckless conduct and breaking curfew, as reported by WGN9.com.

The Takeaway

Hundreds of teenagers joined in on a teenage takeover in the notable Hyde Park community. In the chaos, police say the teens caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to parked vehicles. One officer sustained injuries after being attacked by a 14-year-old girl, according to police. Residents across the city and state are frustrated by the economical harm and are asking the police to do more to stop these incidents. They’re also calling on parents to step up.
