A Chicago Police Department officer was shot after responding to what appears to be a domestic dispute. Here are the wild details.
What Happened
According to ABC7, the shooting of a Chicago SWAT officer happened today, July 20, in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago. It occurred in the 4600 block of South Springfield at about 11 am. Three others were injured during the incident as well.
ABC7 interviewed neighbors who indicated that it began as a domestic dispute and led to the SWAT team showing up. According to the news station, when police arrived, they found a 67-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The situation was bad on the inside of the home as well.
Within the house, police say the suspect took hostages, who were a teenage girl and a woman believed to be his girlfriend. The woman who was shot is believed to be the mother of the girlfriend.
When police went to make entry, they allege the man shot through the door. The bullet struck an officer in the belly in the mayhem. Neighbors described the chaotic scene.
“I saw them trying to shoot tear gas, but that wasn’t working. Then I heard the yelling, and then we were told to not go to the alley anymore because it’s going to become a very dangerous situation,” Anthony Ramos told ABC7.
However, the man eventually released the girl and woman. CPD interim Superintendent Fred Waller described the two as “battered” but not shot. The suspect eventually surrendered. Waller said no cops discharged their weapons.
