What Happened
According to police, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, students from Michigan City High School (MCHS) gathered to celebrate after attending prom. They had left the prom at 10:30 pm to attend the off-campus party. Reports say “multiple” students attended the party in the 1700 block of Liberty Avenue in Pine Township, Indiana, but the exact number isn’t specified. Neighbors described seeing a sudden increase in vehicles pulling up.
Within 30 minutes of the prom ending and the after party beginning, witnesses were calling 911 to report shots fired, according to local news station WTHR.com. It seems the party had barely begun before the suspect(s) opened fire.
According to neighbors, they heard 30 to 40 shots ring out. This happened as students were inside and outside of the house in their formal prom attire.
As police pulled up, they encountered total chaos. Fifty or so teenagers were in panic, seeking safety and trying to get to their vehicles. The congestion made it difficult for emergency vehicles to maneuver through. When they were able to clear the way, police found the aftermath of the shooting.
Reports say police found three injured teens at the residence. However, it is unclear if they were found inside the home, on the front porch or elsewhere on the property. Either way, the discovery was gruesome.
Police found a juvenile male deceased with gunshot wounds. Another juvenile male was injured as well but survived the shooting, along with an 18-year-old female student. Investigators have no one in custody, but they have some evidence.
At least 30 to 40 shots were reported by neighbors and other witnesses. Although authorities have not specified the types of weapons used in the shooting, shell casings were left behind. The number of shots suggest there was likely more than one shooter or that a high-capacity weapon was used. Both could be true, but the investigation continues.
