A Detroit juvenile has been arrested for the shooting of another teen at a Teen Takeover. The events surrounding the shooting has the community enraged. Here’s the full story.
What Happened
According to reports, on May 17, several hundred teenagers flooded Detroit’s Downtown area at about 9:30 pm. The Teen Takeover was planned on social media, and the teens gathered outside of the high-end fashion store Gucci. Unfortunately, two separate groups had planned a takeover, and havoc broke out.
According to ClickOnDetroit.com, within ten minutes, a fight started between the groups. As some of the teens ran in opposite directions, others joined in on the fight. Seconds into it the fight, someone let off gunshots.
Police allege during the melee, 17-year-old Ramon Javon Perez Smith pulled out a pistol to settle the dispute. They say he indiscriminately opened fire into the crowd, letting off multiple shots. The outcome was horrific.
A 14-year-old boy who’s a football player was hit by one of the bullets. Prosecutors say Smith shot Tavuan Clark one time in the chest, just a quarter inch from his heart. As the other teenagers scattered to get away, the shooter slipped through the crowd. Tavuan was left bleeding on the pavement, but help wasn’t far away.
Because the city had intel a Teen Takeover would likely be taking place, emergency response teams were already within the vicinity. A Community Violence Intervention (CVI) team member heard the shots and ran directly to the 14-year-old victim to administer first-aid. But the story wasn’t over because the city had also heightened security patrols in the area. The suspect wouldn’t get far.
The Detroit Police immediately flooded the area in search of the suspect. Soon, they came across a teen and performed a search of him. According to police, they found a gun on the 16-year-old and arrested him. They determined he was not the shooter they were looking for but charged him for the gun.
At about 10 pm, they came across 17-year-old Ramon Javon Perez Smith. Police found the firearm on him and arrested him for the shooting of the 14-year-old victim.
The Takeaway
Ramon Javon Perez Smith has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in Detroit has charged him as an adult, and he is being held in jail. Tavuan Clark suffered serious injuries and had to have part of his lung removed. As for the Teen Takeover, over 100 teens were detained for curfew violations.
