What Happened

Just after 1:30 am today, May 24, a group of roughly 100 teens met for a Teen Takeover on Roosevelt Road and Loomis Street. Soon after, reports show that 911 started receiving a high volume of calls. The group of teens had begun clogging streets. But the situation only escalated, even with police arriving to monitor.

By 3 am, police say the teens had started setting off fireworks and intentionally blocking the intersection. They trapped a commercial truck and tow truck in the street and danced on top of them. Residents and police alike had had enough, and the police officially began dispersing the crowd at about 3:15 am. As they did so, they were blindsided.

At 3:20 am, an 18-year-old driver began heading west in the eastbound lanes of Roosevelt Road. Driving erratically, he struck 5 officers. According to CBS News, “after hitting the officers, the car hit a Chicago Police Department vehicle, a pole, and a fence.”

The driver was arrested, and the blue sedan was searched. Police say they found a firearm. The officers were taken to the hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.

The Takeaway

During this Teen Takeover on Roosevelt and Loomis streets, 5 officers were hit by a car driven by an 18-year-old armed suspect. He was arrested, and the officers were transported to the hospital. Residents are frustrated with these Teen Takeovers, noting the violence and property damage. With summer approaching, there seems to be no chance of these incidents slowing down.
