What Happened
According to reports by The Daily Herald, on Friday, May 22, Pablo Contreras, 50, got into an altercation with his wife in their Oakwood Hills, Illinois home. From what a judge said, the couple had an argument “regarding the disclosure” of a family inheritance she received.
Contreras accused his wife of concealing the true amount of the inheritance. At some point, Contreras left the house and got into his car. This is when prosecutors say the situation escalated.
Police reports say Contreras “intentionally” backed into his wife in their driveway. Prosecutors allege he then changed gears and ran over his wife a second time as he fled the scene. He was later arrested and charged with a number of counts, while his wife faced horrific bodily injuries.
The victim is on a breathing tube as she waits for surgery. She has a damaged clavicle and carotid artery. The judge is ensuring Contreras doesn’t leave jail pending the outcome of his trial.
During his court hearing Saturday, May 23, the judge made reference to the victim’s injuries before ordering Contreras detained. The judge rebuked his claim it was an “accident,” noting the multiple times he allegedly ran over her. In his decision, the judge wrote that Contreras did not stop or give aid. He also didn’t call an ambulance.
According to the Daily Herald, the judge further wrote, “The court can make a reasonable inference that the self-serving statement isn’t credible and that he poses a serious threat to his wife, and driving over her once and then twice is either intentional or a willful disregard to her safety.”
The couple had two small children in the home during the incident. No one else was injured during the incident.
The Takeaway
Pablo Contreras, 50, is facing multiple charges for allegedly running over his wife. His charges include Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Causing a Crash with Injuries and Failing to Report a Crash with Injuries. He is being detained in jail while he waits for trial. His next court date is June 2, 2026.
