What Happened

According to NBC Chicago, New Chicago, Indiana police chief Earl D. Mayo is facing multiple felony charges for misconduct. Police allege that Mayo stole a firearm related to an upcoming trial to prevent it from being used as evidence. An affidavit states that he intentionally tried to change the gun’s tracing information as well. Later, he’s alleged to have sold the gun to a pawn shop in Hobart, Indiana. But he soon realized his plan would likely fail, so he did some outreach.

When Mayo started feeling the heat, reports say he contacted another New Chicago police officer for help. He asked the man to buy the gun back for him from the pawn shop. He also directed the man to a safe in his Merrillville home to collect some firearms with silencers. Eventually, Mayo got some assistance.

As noted by NBC Chicago, a woman named Tanika Roshawn Borders, 47, of Merrillville, is facing charges as well. Police allege she attempted to purchase the firearm Mayo sold to the pawn shop. Additionally, she tried destroying vials of animal-grade anabolic steroids for Mayo. The chief is facing a slew of charges. As reported by NBC Chicago, these are the charges he faces:

  • Official misconduct (Felony)
  • Obstruction of justice (Felony)
  • Official misconduct (Felony)
  • Unlawful possession of anabolic steroid (Felony)
  • Unlawful possession of anabolic steroid (Felony)

Mayo was arrested at 6:03 pm on Friday, May 22, and booked into the Clark County, Ohio, Jail at 6:57 p.m, reports say. He was arrested without incident.
