A well-known coach who came to Chicago to briefly visit his family and friends was found shot to death inside a home. Now, the family is seeking justice, and the circumstances are mysterious.
What Happened
According to CBS News, police were called to a home in the 7600 block of South Emerald Street at 10 am on Wednesday, July 29. The owner of the home had entered and ran into a chilling scene.
Reports say the homeowner found their friend Tim Bankston, 60, on the floor with a gunshot wound. Bankston had been shot in the stomach, prompting the homeowner to call for help.

When police arrived, they pronounced Bankston dead at the scene. Upon doing a full sweep of the house, they found one single shell casing. They also taped off the house, since it is part of an active murder investigation. Although some of the details remained undisclosed, the victim’s family is speaking out.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has not confirmed how long Bankston was bleeding on the floor, but the family believes it was hours.
“The hours that he laid there without someone knowing that he was there was probably the nail in his coffin,” Karolyn, Bankston’s sister, told CBS News. His family also remembered him as an empathetic, giving man.
“He was always willing to help on and off the court,” Bankston’s great-niece Kailey Rose said during an interview.
Bankston was a former star basketball player at Simeon. He may have retired his jersey, but he worked as a coach for decades.
He was the varsity basketball coach at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City. Additionally, he was a Dean’s Assistant. As part of this work, he mentored athletes and helped them get the right start in life.
Bankston is originally from the Chicago area but had moved to Indiana. He was here in the city visiting family members and friends. His workplace in Calumet City is a relatively short distance from Chicago.
No suspects are in custody as of this writing.
