What Happened

According to CWB Chicago, a 34-year-old man had been in the 4900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on August 4 at 10 am, commuting at the Jefferson Park Transit Center. Witnesses said that at some point, a group of five or six began harassing the man on the Metra platform. It then escalated into physical violence.

“He got a cut on his head and blood ran down his head,” a witness said. A CPD spokesperson said the attackers “grabbed the victim, punched him in the head and kicked him in the head and body multiple times.”

As reported by CWB, the Chicago Police gave a similar account of the incident as witnesses but said the victim was at the CTA bus stop outside when the group approached him. One of the witnesses sought help.

A male witness went to seek police assistance, and the group entered the main CTA tunnel that runs over the Kennedy Expressway. The police were there and stopped the group. An arrest was then made.

Derrell Jackson, 22, was taken into custody at the scene. He was accused of being the attacker who kicked the man in the head and body when he was down.

Jackson was charged only with misdemeanor battery. CWB reports that Jackson had been arrested three times since March 9 of this year. The new station also notes that he was arrested in December in Oak Park. However all previous charges have been dropped, and no other parties of his group were charged in the current case.

The Takeaway

A 34-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at the Jefferson Park Transit Center by a group of individuals on Tuesday, August 4. However, just one arrest was made. Derrell Jackson was charged, and he faces only a misdemeanor battery charge. It does not seem like a charge that will correct the behavior of a person who’s accused of beating another person bloody.
