What Happened
On Saturday, July 11, police began searching an alley in the 700 block of West 54th Street, near Peoria Street. It is unclear what sent them there, but as they searched, they made a troubling discovery.
Social media videos showed police searching an alleyway in the Back of the Yards community and eventually pulling a body from a trash can. The victim has been identified by the family as 38-year-old nursing student Zenobia Weatherspoon. Her family learned of her death through videos leaked on social media. There have not been many answers provided, and some answers raise more questions.
Zenobia had gone missing three weeks before, and she did have an active restraining order that she had filed for in May. It appears to be a temporary restraining order, since it came with a future court date. The suspect in that case has not been revealed. Police are investigating the cause of death as well.
Currently, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is attempting to find the manner of her murder. As they do, the family is calling for justice.

“It’s heartbreaking. It’s really heartbreaking,” Javon Weatherspoon, Zenobia’s brother, said. Her cousins had a lot to say about Zenobia’s genuine character.
“She the type of the person who would give you the shirt off her back, and that’s just the facts about Zee. Great person. We all loved her. We family,” said Jatara Leslie, Zenobia’s cousin.
Zenobia’s mother notes that her daughter was smart, intelligent and goal-oriented. Unfortunately, this happened to Zenobia, and her family wants privacy as they grieve.
